Networking overview for small businesses

A network allows your business to more easily share information and resources (such as printers) from one computer to another, which helps you increase employee productivity and reduce costs.

Imtex can specify and install a network that suits your business and office buildings. Network cabling to each PC or wireless technologies. Contact us for more information.

The two most common types of networks are peer-to-peer and client/server. Computers are connected together using cabling or wirelessly.

Peer-to-Peer Networks
Multiple computers connected together. Computers are normally connected to a hub or wireless access point.

While this is a simple, low-cost solution there are limitations, there is no centralised security. If one computer shuts down, loses power or loses data, no one can access the information on that computer. Peer-to-peer networks also tend to slow down with more than five computers.

Client/Server Networks
An extension of the peer-to-peer network with a server added. The clients are individual computers, printers or other devices.

The server is designed to perform specific tasks such as file sharing and printing. Additionally servers can provide services such as e-mail.

The server enables information to be stored, organised, and shared centrally so users are not dependant on individual PCs. Servers can also control access to files adding security.
